3DC

3DC is a Japan-based startup that aims to commercialize Graphene MesoSponge (GMS), a next-generation carbon material developed by the Nishihara Lab at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research of Tohoku University. “3DC” stands for “three-dimensional carbon materials,” based on GMS as a material expanded three-dimensionally from the two-dimensional graphene. 

Founded in 2022, 3DC is commercializing research that began nearly a decade earlier at Tohoku University. The company is backed by Open Innovation funding from Hyundai and is currently operating at pilot scale while working with global battery manufacturers.

At CES 2026, 3DC presented its Graphene MesoSponge, a controllable 3D graphene material built for next-generation batteries.
