Holcim UK and Canary Wharf Group explore graphene-enhanced concrete

Holcim UK and Canary Wharf Group have completed a six-month collaboration focusing on next-generation, ultra low-carbon, and circular concrete mixes for upcoming development projects at Canary Wharf. The partnership – which included participation from several civil engineering consultancies and universities – tested novel formulations that aim to significantly reduce the carbon impact of construction materials.

One of the most promising developments from the trial program was a graphene-infused concrete mix, which achieved more than a 50% reduction in carbon footprint compared to traditional concrete, alongside enhanced strength and durability. The graphene component plays a key role in improving the mechanical performance and longevity of the concrete, enabling lower cement content and a smaller overall carbon footprint.

Trial pours using these innovative mixes took place in 2025 across several Canary Wharf construction sites, including a test slab at a theatre venue in Wood Wharf and deep raft slabs at a Bank Street site. The materials will now undergo two years of performance monitoring to assess their durability and environmental performance in real-world conditions.
