Graphene could replace ITO in OLED displays

In a new UK-funded research, scientists from Paragraf and Queen Mary University of London have successfully fabricated an Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) with a monolayer graphene anode instead of the problematic ITO.

Professor Colin Humphreys of Queen Mary and Paragraf, says: Because of its importance and scarcity there have been many attempts to replace ITO, but no material has been found to have a comparable performance in an electronic or optical device until now. Our paper is the first paper in the world to demonstrate that graphene can replace ITO in an electronic/optical device. We have shown that a graphene-OLED has identical performance to an ITO-OLED. ITO-OLEDs are widely used as the touch screens on our mobile phones.

GS Alliance develops a graphene QD and silica composite to create efficient white LEDs

Japan-based material developer Green Science Alliance developed a new composite material made from a combination of graphene quantum dots and silica, which could be useful for creating white LEDs from blue LEDs (440-470 nm).

Green Science Alliance graphene QD + silica composite for white LED

The company says that this is the first adoption of such a material for LED applications. The company says the adoption of the QD and Silica offers superior performance to the currently-used phosphor as the QDs do not suffer from light scattering, and the white LED is more efficient. The material is also said to be inexpensive.

Researchers use graphene to create detachable flexible microLED devices

University of Texas at Dallas researchers and their international colleagues have developed a graphene-based method to create micro LEDs that can be folded, twisted, cut and stuck to different surfaces. The research could help pave the way for the next generation of flexible, wearable technology.

Used in various applications like signage and automotive lights, LEDs are ubiquitous because they are lightweight, thin, energy efficient and visible in different types of lighting. Micro LEDs, which can be as small as 2 micrometers and bundled to be any size, provide higher resolution than LEDs. Their size makes them a good fit for small devices such as smart watches, but they can be bundled to work in flat-screen TVs and other larger displays. LEDs of all sizes, however, are brittle and typically can only be used on flat surfaces. The researchers’ new micro LEDs aim to enable bendable, wearable electronics.

EU-funded ATTRACT consortium presents its support of several graphene projects

The MULTIMAL research project is developing a small device that can be used to rapidly identify malaria parasites using saliva samples, without the need for lab equipment. MULTIMAL is one of eight projects exploring new uses for graphene with support from ATTRACT, a €20 million EU-funded, CERN-led consortium, which has awarded 170 grants worth €100,000 each for one-year proof-of-concept technology projects.

Today’s portable malaria testing kits are just above flipping a coin, because they are right only 60 percent of the time, says MULTIMAL principal investigator Jérôme Bôrme. The disease, which the World Health Organisation says killed 435,000 people in 2017 (nearly all of them in Africa), is caused by five species of parasite that can be easily identified in a lab. But treating the disease in remote towns and villages is difficult because of the lack of reliable portable testing kits, explains Bôrme, MULTIMAL’s principal investigator and staff researcher at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory in Portugal, which runs MULTIMAL in collaboration with the University of Minho.
