Researchers develop an efficient and healthy laser-induced graphene foam lighting device

Researchers from the Institute of low temperature and structure research in Wroclaw, Poland, developed a new efficient white light source that uses graphene foam excitated by a continuous-wave laser. The laser opens up a bandgap in graphene which results in light emission that ranges from 360nm (UV) or 405nm (visible) to 980nm-1064nm (near-infrared).

The researchers say that the light spectrum of this device is similar to the spectrum of the sun which is better than current light sources such as LEDs that offer light spectrum with strong peaks (the main problem is the strong blue light emission in LED lighting). This design can achieve a high efficiency (over 200 lm/W), high color rendering index (CRI > 99) and a broadband warm white color. The lifetime depends on the laser, which can be over 10,000 hours.

JTX demonstrates its graphene filament LED lighting

JTX (officially Shandong Prosperous Star Optoelectronics Co) demonstrated its graphene-enhanced LED lighting bulbs at the Hong Kong lighting fair. These LED lighting devices use graphene coating that aid in heat dissipation and thus contribute to longer lifetime and better efficiency.

JTX is a relatively new company (established in May 2014 in China) that is involved with the entire LED lighting value chain (from LED chips and filaments to complete light bulbs). In July 2016 JTX was merged with Graphene Lighting PLC that developed the graphene lighting technology in collaboration with Manchester University and the NGI.

Graphene-enhanced street lighting fixtures are being deployed in China

Reports out of China state that graphene-based road lighting fixtures are being installed in 28 streets in Beijing, which are said to be up to 30% more energy efficient than current fixtures. These graphene lamps can reportedly reach 140 lumens per watt, which means the new lamps can be much brighter than currently used ones, that produce 110 lumens per watt.

The fixtures' exteriors are made of black and grey composite materials and most of the heat-conducting adhesives and chips inside are said to be produced with graphene. The Chinese official PR mentioned a company called MS Technology but its exact role is not clear. It is said to be "a company focusing on heat dispersing materials research and the firm that first invented graphene lamps that were put into mass production".

Graphene-based white LEDs could be "green" and efficient

Researchers from Taiwan have demonstrated a white LED consisting of a strontium-based metalorganic framework (MOF), graphene, and inorganic semiconductors, which can generate a bright white light emission.

White LEDs can be long-lasting and energy efficient, but white LEDs are currently made with rare-earth elements, and mining these minerals can be costly and produce toxic waste. Additionally, existing commercial methods for producing white LEDs involve multiple components and steps that hamper efficiency and quality.

Graphene to assist in improving the efficiency of LEDs

Researchers in Taiwan have shown that graphene could be used as an efficient heat sink between p-n junctions in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). When glued to a polyamide via a titane coupling agent (TCA), reduced graphene improved the thermal conductivity of an interfacial nanocomposite by 53%, compared to a control that contained only the polymer.

In addition to being 53% more thermally conductive than the polyamide polymer alone, the graphene composite also came to a higher equilibrium temperature, signifying better heat transfer. When used to coat the interface, LEDs maintained 95% of their light intensity over 7,000 hours, while the control only maintained about 68%.

Exeter's GraphExeter material to open the door to flexible screens

Researchers at Exeter used their GraphExeter material (compressed ferric chloride molecules between two sheets of graphene) to bring flexible electronics a step closer. GraphExeter allows for a new system that is a better conductor of electricity than graphene, and can be used to make large, flat and flexible lighting.

The main advantage is that the material is capable of high luminosity, reportedly beating comparable products by 50% greater brightness. One limitation with the current developments in flexible screens is that the brightness that can be achieved decreases as the screen becomes larger, but GraphExeter is said to overcome this.
