PhD Position: Acousto-electric modulation of epitaxial graphene (SAWtrain)

Last updated on Fri 22/07/2022 - 14:54

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are mechanical vibrations travelling along the surface of a material, which resemble micro earthquakes on a chip. This PhD project exploits super high-frequency (SHF >3 GHz) SAWs for carrier transport and band-structure modulation of epitaxial graphene (EG) on SiC.

The ESR will synthesise EG and study transport properties under SAW with wavelengths comparable to the carrier mean free path (≤100 nm) aiming at mobility control and possible detection of phonon-mediated superconductivity. The activities will also include the fabrication of transducer for the generation of SHF SAWSs using nanoimprint and e-beam lithography as well as Raman and magneto-transport spectroscopy studies.

Potential applications include acousto-electric switches and attenuators analogues to optical devices (e.g. electron collimators and lenses). The project is part of the European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Network SAWtrain.

This offer is for a structured PhD programme with activities in different institutions and an attractive 36-month contract. Please note that the MSCA encourage transnational mobility. A master or diploma degree in physics, material science, or related area is required.
