An academic team from the School of Chemistry (Prof R Dryfe) and School of Materials (Prof I Kinloch) has been awarded an Innovate UK (previously TSB) grant to work on a 12 month project on the development of graphene-based electrode materials for a new type of alkali metal ion battery. The project is a collaboration with Thomas Swan (based in County Durham) and Sharp Laboratories Europe, who are based near Oxford.
The position is for someone to be part of a wider team of researchers, both in the industrial labs and at Manchester, who are working on electrochemical energy storage and the preparation and characterization of graphene-based materials. This project combines both strands of research interests from the academic and industrial groups. The applicant will be largely based in Manchester, but will be required to liaise regularly with the industrial partners, by video-conferencing and with regular meetings; it is likely that some periods of laboratory work will be performed in one, or both, of the partner laboratories.
Applicants will hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, material science or a closely related field. You must have extensive electrochemical experience, ideally in the specific area of electrochemical energy storage (batteries, or supercapacitors). Experience in the synthesis and characterization of graphene and related materials would be advantageous. They should be able to interact effectively with a range of researchers, and particularly with the industrial partners, where strict time-lines regarding the progress of the project will be adhered to.
