High-speed and on-silicon-chip graphene blackbody emitters

A research team from Japan has developed an integrated, high-speed and on-chip blackbody emitter based on graphene. The team reports that the device operated in NIR region including telecommunication wavelengths. A fast response time of ~ 100 ps, which is ~ 105 higher than the previous graphene emitters, has been experimentally demonstrated for single and few-layer graphene, the emission responses can be controlled by the graphene contact with the substrate depending on the number of graphene layers.

The team stated that graphene light emitters are greatly advantageous over conventional compound semiconductor emitters because they can be integrated on silicon chips due to simple fabrication processes of graphene emitters and direct coupling with silicon waveguide through an evanescent field. Because graphene can realize high-speed, small footprint and on-Si-chip light emitters, which are still challenges for compound semiconductors, the graphene-based light emitters can open new routes to highly integrated optoelectronics and silicon photonics.

C-MET develops a rapidly rechargeable graphene-based emergency lamp

The India-based Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) has designed and developed a graphene-based emergency lamp which can be fully charged in less than two minutes.

Commercially available emergency lamps rely on a battery which requires a minimum of three hours to get fully charged. Use of graphene-based supercapacitors, instead of the battery, reportedly ensures more life for the storage system of the lamp. It can be directly charged from the power supply in one or two minutes and provide light for up to 30-60 minutes. Another attractive feature of the lamp is its excellent power efficiency coupled with long operating life. It can also be charged from solar power, as was reported. C-MET has filed an Indian patent application for this technology.

Researchers observe high intensity light emission from individual graphene nanoribbons

Researchers led by the CNR-Nanoscience Institute in Modena, Italy, and the University of Strasbourg in France, have experimentally observed light emission from individual graphene nanoribbons for the first time. They demonstrated that 7-atom-wide nanoribbons emit light at a high intensity that is comparable to bright light-emitting devices made from carbon nanotubes, and that the color can be tuned by adjusting the voltage. These findings may open the door to the development of bright graphene-based light sources.

Light emission from individual graphene nanoribbons image

Experimentally, there have been only a few demonstrations of light emission from graphene nanoribbons, and these have been limited to ensembles of nanoribbons and revealed only weak light emission. So the results of the new study, which show a much brighter light emitted by individual graphene nanoribbons compared to ensembles, hint at the exciting potential of graphene's optical properties.

China-based Tunghsu Optoelectronics unveils new graphene LEDs

The China-based Tunghsu Optoelectronic Technology has announced a new series of graphene LED ‘super lights’ at the 2017 International Graphene Innovation Conference. The new lights reportedly use graphene for heat dissipation and conduction.

The new LEDs' volume is said to be 75% lower than traditional LED lights and they are 30% lighter. Power-saving capacity is 20-30% better and they provide high-performance luminescence and light distribution. The lights also come with a smart connection function, according to the company. Users can integrate information devices, transmit Wi-Fi hotspots, gather environmental information, monitor road security and act as emergency alarms.
