Graphene heat dissipation boosts micro-LED performance for AR displays

Shanghai University researchers have designed a blue-green light micro-LED for Augmented Reality Heads-up Displays (AR-HUD) using COMSOL software, coupling photo-thermal properties with multi-physical fields. By incorporating a graphene film and heat sink for heat dissipation, the thermal management scheme of the micro-LED was further optimized.

The effect of graphene film thickness on heat dissipation performance was investigated, with the aim to improve photoelectric conversion efficiency and reduce the impact of high junction temperature on device reliability and performance.

Researchers use graphene nanorods to design OLED emitters

Researchers from France's LPICM and Université Paris-Saclay have designed new graphene-based OLED emitters that outperform previous graphene emitters.

Nanographene OLED emitters design

The researchers designed green emitters based on rod-shaped nanographene materials containing C60-tBu8 materials, and incorporated these into a benchmark OLED device. The OLED devices containing the C60-tBu8 exhibited current and power efficiencies (CE and PE) of 2.27 cd·A–1, 0.28 lm·W–1 and luminance of 164 cd·m–2.

New graphene-based laser lift-off process enables ultrathin flexible displays

Researchers from Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials recently reported a graphene-based laser lift-off technique that prevents damage while separating ultrathin OLED displays. This advancement could open the door towards ultra-thin, stretchable devices that fit comfortably against human skin, revolutionizing wearable device technology.

Polyimide (PI) films are widely used in these applications due to their excellent thermal stability and mechanical flexibility. They are crucial for emerging technologies like rollable displays, wearable sensors, and implantable photonic devices. However, when the thickness of these films is reduced below 5 μm, traditional laser lift-off (LLO) techniques often fail. Mechanical deformation, wrinkling, and leftover residues frequently compromise the quality and functionality of ultrathin devices, making the process inefficient and costly.
